The national overall asking rent at the end of the quarter was $27.63/sf, up from $27.52/sf in the first quarter and down from $28.69/sf one year ago. The market with the greatest increase in rent was San Francisco, where the average jumped to $29.11/sf from $27.87/sf in the first quarter- a 4.4% increase.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, total nonfarm employment in the U.S. decreased 0.4% for the 12 months ending in May 2010. The region with the greatest amount of jobs lost over that period was the West region, where employment decreased 0.8%, indicating a loss of 265,164 jobs. Employment increased by 433,000 jobs in the month of May alone in the U.S., although 411,000 of those hires were temporary Census 2010 workers.
